What You’ll Do

  • Oversee the Acute Care Surgery unit, ensuring efficient and high-quality service delivery.
  • Supervise and mentor junior surgical staff, providing structured training and bedside teaching.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs within the Division of General Surgery.
  • Participate actively in acute surgery rosters and multidisciplinary patient care.
  • Engage in theatre-based service delivery, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
  • Involve in quality assurance initiatives, including morbidity and mortality reviews and clinical audits.
  • Collaborate on system redesign projects aimed at improving patient flow and safety within the surgical ecosystem.

What You’ll Need

  • Appropriate qualification enabling registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
  • For Grade 1: No experience required after HPCSA registration.
  • For Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ experience post-registration as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
  • For Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ experience post-registration as a Medical Specialist in General Surgery.
  • Valid (Code B/EB) driver’s licence.
  • Ability to work in a high-volume clinical and surgical environment.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with experience in training staff and students.
  • Competency in clinical and surgical practices in General Surgery, alongside a keen interest in data-driven service improvement.
