About the Role
The Department of Health is seeking dedicated Medical Officers (Anaesthetics) to join the team at Mowbray Maternity Hospital in Cape Town. This role is vital in providing comprehensive anaesthetic and critical care services to expectant mothers and surgical patients. As a Medical Officer, you will be responsible for pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative anaesthetic management, ensuring safe and effective care in the theatre and wards. What You’ll Do
- Deliver anaesthesia and critical care services to patients in theatre and wards.
- Manage pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative anaesthetic care for surgical patients.
- Provide critical care to surgical ICU patients at Groote Schuur Hospital.
- Teach, train, and supervise interns, students, and nursing colleagues.
- Rotate through hospitals affiliated with the University of Cape Town, including Groote Schuur and New Somerset Hospital.
- Participate in the call roster for continuous patient support.
- Engage in management duties such as presenting statistics and contributing to research.
What You’ll Need
- Appropriate qualification for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
- Experience requirements vary:
- Grade 1: No post-registration experience required for SA qualified employees.
- Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Medical Practitioner post-registration for SA qualified employees.
- Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a Medical Practitioner post-registration for SA qualified employees.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Interest in developing an academic career and demonstrating clinical leadership skills.
- Diploma in Anaesthetics (DA) from the College of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) is preferred.
- Willingness to undertake after-hours duties, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
