What You’ll Do
- Provide legal research and analytical summaries to assist judges in making informed decisions.
- Consult with the judiciary in chambers, taking instructions and perusing all lodged materials.
- Conduct research on electronic databases as requested by judges to ensure comprehensive and accurate findings.
- Draft speeches, conference papers, and legal articles that adhere to the court’s style guide and quality standards.
- Supervise and develop research staff, ensuring effective delegation and quality control of work outputs.
- Keep the judiciary informed of recent developments in case law, practice directives, and legislation.
- Manage performance and conduct of researchers, providing guidance and training to enhance their skills.
- Ensure thorough preparation of memorandums on research outcomes, double-checking references and footnotes.
What You’ll Need
- An LLB Degree at NQF level 8.
- A minimum of three years of legal research experience, with at least two years in a supervisory role.
- Proficiency in electronic information resources and computer research programs, such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
- Strong knowledge of South African law and the judicial system, including the Employment Equity Act.
- Excellent skills in Microsoft Office programs, research methodologies, and effective communication.
- Attributes such as the ability to multitask, work under pressure, maintain confidentiality, and meet strict deadlines.
