About the Role

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is seeking a dedicated Scientist Production Grade A to join the Benthic Research Group in Cape Town. This pivotal role focuses on the sustainable management of South Africa’s abalone fishery, a vital resource that not only supports the economy but is also crucial for the ecological balance of our marine environments. As a Scientist, you will conduct essential research that aids in the recovery and long-term sustainability of abalone populations, ensuring that this valuable species continues to thrive for future generations.

Based in the Foretrust Building, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of experts and engage with various stakeholders, including fisheries managers and industry representatives. What You’ll Do

• Conduct applied scientific research on abalone population biology and ecology.
• Undertake statistical modeling and quantitative analyses to support fisheries management.
• Develop methodologies and analytical tools for resource recovery.
• Participate in biological monitoring programs, including diver-based surveys and field sampling.
• Collect, analyze, and disseminate scientific information through reports and publications.
• Engage with stakeholders, including fisheries managers and research institutions.
• Identify research gaps and contribute to developing scientific interventions.
• Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating research projects.
• Mentor and supervise technicians, students, and junior scientists.

What You’ll Need

• A BSc (Hons) degree or equivalent in Fisheries Science, Marine Science, or a closely related field.
• Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist.
• A minimum of three years’ post-qualification experience in fisheries science or marine resource assessment.
• Strong knowledge of population dynamics and fisheries stock assessment.
• Proven experience in statistical analysis and data interpretation.
• Familiarity with abalone biology and recovery strategies for depleted stocks.
• Computer literacy with advanced statistical software skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• A valid South African driver’s license.
