What You’ll Do

  • Provide community-based specialist psychiatric care, focusing on treatment and rehabilitation.
  • Implement and support integrated primary mental health care initiatives.
  • Offer academic teaching and supervision to Psychiatric Registrars and Medical Officers.
  • Deliver in-service training and clinical support to district Family Physicians and primary health care practitioners.
  • Collaborate with various non-health sectors to improve the recognition and care of mental health issues.
  • Engage in outreach education and awareness activities at the community level.
  • Conduct and promote research in community psychiatry and integrated primary mental health care.
  • Participate in administrative duties, clinical audits, and quality improvement initiatives within the mental health services.

What You’ll Need

  • Grade 12/Matric Certificate.
  • MBCHB and FC Psych / MMed (Psychiatry) or equivalent qualification for HPCSA registration.
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in Psychiatry.
  • Experience requirements:
  • Grade 1: No experience needed after HPCSA registration.
  • Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years experience as a Medical Specialist.
  • Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years experience as a Medical Specialist.
  • Strong knowledge and skills in Psychiatry practice.
  • Ability to handle common medical problems and emergencies.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Familiarity with current Health Legislation and policies relating to public institutions.
