About the Role
The National Treasury is seeking a skilled Deputy Director: Editing and Research to join its dynamic team in Pretoria. This pivotal role is essential for ensuring the clarity, quality, and consistency of key budget documents that impact the financial landscape of South Africa. Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and various authors, you will oversee the editing process of the Budget Review and the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, contributing significantly to public service and the effective management of national resources.
In this role, you will not only manage the editing of crucial documents but also engage in training chapter authors and budget analysts, fostering a culture of excellence within the National Treasury. By ensuring that these documents meet editorial standards, you will directly support effective governance and economic decision-making in South Africa, thereby making a meaningful difference in your community.

What You’ll Do
- Manage the editing process for the Budget Review and Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement
- Collaborate with chapter authors to verify the accuracy and clarity of content
- Ensure alignment with National Treasury editorial guidelines
- Train writers and budget analysts to enhance the quality of budget documents
- Monitor the use of artificial intelligence in drafting Treasury documents
- Assist with reputation management and strategic messaging for the Director General
- Conduct analysis of media coverage to identify opportunities for public engagement
- Create content for the Director General’s social media pages and other senior officials
What You’ll Need
- Grade 12 certificate along with a minimum Honours Degree in Economics, Finance, or Journalism
- At least 5 years of experience in business journalism, economic research, or professional editing
- Strong knowledge of macroeconomic and fiscal issues, as well as the South African public finance landscape
- Familiarity with digital media platforms and their effective use
- Excellent communication and content creation skills
