The Department of Agriculture is seeking a Senior Agricultural Economist to be based in Pretoria, Gauteng. This role is pivotal in shaping agricultural trade policies and monitoring agreements within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). As a Senior Agricultural Economist, you will play a crucial role in supporting the agricultural sector, which is a cornerstone of South Africa’s economy and vital for food security, job creation, and rural development.

What You’ll Do

• Monitor the implementation of the SADC Free Trade Area (FTA) and SACU Agreement
• Prepare and participate in interdepartmental meetings and trade negotiations
• Address trade enquiries from the agricultural industry under these agreements
• Draft and present reports for the Agricultural Trade Forum, including monthly and quarterly updates
• Provide advice on trade relations and policies impacting agricultural trade with African countries
• Conduct trade analysis and monitor policies through the WTO Trade Policy Reviews
• Consult with industry stakeholders to prepare for Tripartite FTA and African Continental FTA negotiations
• Represent the Department of Agriculture in the National Implementation Committee

What You’ll Need

• A Grade 12 certificate and a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics or a 3-year Bachelor’s degree plus an Honours degree in Agricultural Economics/Economics
• A minimum of three years of supervisory experience in an agricultural trade or economic environment
• Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act and advanced analytical techniques
• Proficiency in computer skills and statistical analysis
• Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation skills
• A valid driver’s license
