What You’ll Do

• Lead and oversee scientific analyses related to small pelagic fish and fisheries.
• Conduct fisheries stock assessments using statistical analysis and modelling techniques.
• Develop and implement methodologies, policies, and systems for sustainable fisheries management.
• Engage with the fisheries industry and small-scale fishers to identify gaps and interventions.
• Conduct both basic and applied research on fisheries management procedures.
• Provide scientific data, information, and documentation for decision-making in fisheries management.
• Mentor and train junior personnel in data analysis and scientific practices.
• Supervise scientific data archiving and retrieval processes as necessary.

What You’ll Need

• A PhD (NQF Level 10) in Science/Natural or a relevant qualification recognized by SAQA.
• At least ten years of relevant scientific experience after obtaining your BSc qualification.
• Compulsory registration with SACNASP as a Professional Natural Scientist.
• Strong knowledge of fisheries and biological research activities, particularly related to small pelagic fish.
• Proficiency in statistical analysis, data analysis, and scientific methodologies.
• Ability to mentor others and develop research programs effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills, with the ability to work under pressure.
• Willingness to conduct fieldwork, including working at sea.
