The Department of Health is looking for a passionate Environmental Health Practitioner Grade 1: Malaria to join its dedicated team in Bushbuckridge, located in the Ehlanzeni District of Mpumalanga. This role is critical in the fight against malaria, a disease that poses a significant health risk in many communities across South Africa. By coordinating and supervising malaria programme field teams, you will play a vital part in disease surveillance, vector control, and health promotion activities that directly impact the well-being of the community.

Your daily responsibilities will include planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating malaria elimination interventions according to national and provincial guidelines. What You’ll Do

• Coordinate and supervise malaria programme field teams for effective disease surveillance and vector control.
• Plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate malaria elimination interventions in compliance with national and provincial policies.
• Oversee Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) operations, ensuring quality assurance and reporting.
• Conduct malaria disease surveillance activities, including case notification and outbreak response.
• Facilitate community-based malaria screening, testing, and treatment in line with approved guidelines.
• Support active case detection and follow-up to interrupt local malaria transmission.
• Coordinate entomological surveillance, including mosquito collections and insecticide resistance monitoring.
• Implement health promotion and community mobilization activities to encourage behaviour change.
• Supervise malaria programme personnel, providing guidance and mentorship.
• Manage procurement planning and stock distribution for malaria programme commodities.
• Monitor programme performance through data collection and analysis, ensuring quality assurance.
• Engage in operational planning and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

What You’ll Need

• An appropriate National Diploma in Environmental Health or Public Health, qualifying for registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Environmental Health Practitioner.
• Current registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Environmental Health Practitioner.
• A valid driver’s licence and computer literacy.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of communicable disease control and environmental health legislation.
• Ability to supervise and coordinate field teams, work independently under pressure, and travel extensively.
• Experience in malaria control, disease surveillance, or health promotion is an advantage.
