The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is seeking a Deputy Director: Forest Based Enterprises to join their dynamic team in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. This role is pivotal in supporting and developing forestry small growers, timber production enterprises, and community forestry projects. What You’ll Do

  • Manage and implement programs aimed at supporting forestry small growers and timber production enterprises.
  • Provide technical and business development support to forestry SMMEs and community forestry projects.
  • Facilitate market access, funding opportunities, and certification processes for forestry enterprises.
  • Coordinate the development and expansion of small-scale timber production enterprises.
  • Oversee the implementation of afforestation programs and facilitate water trading processes.
  • Develop and implement strategies for Non-Timber Forest Products.
  • Establish and coordinate provincial structures and forums to support SMMEs and timber growers.
  • Engage with communities, traditional authorities, and development partners for effective program implementation.
  • Participate in the Forestry Blended Finance Scheme and the Forestry Masterplan.

What You’ll Need

  • National Diploma (NQF6) in Forestry or a relevant qualification recognized by SAQA.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the forestry field, with three years at a junior managerial level.
  • Proven experience in the forestry sector or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of the National Forests Act and National Environmental Management Act.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and policies affecting the forestry sector.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving and leadership management skills.
  • High level of computer literacy and ability to work under pressure.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
