What You’ll Do

  • Provide technical leadership in data collection, management, and analysis for crustacean research.
  • Develop and maintain fisheries databases to support ongoing research and monitoring programmes.
  • Coordinate field surveys and sampling activities, ensuring quality control of data collected.
  • Participate in sea-going and field trips to gather essential research data.
  • Contribute to Scientific and Management Working Group meetings with technical inputs and progress reports.
  • Compile and disseminate technical reports and data products for stakeholders and scientific forums.
  • Liaise with research institutions, universities, and industry partners on crustacean research matters.
  • Assist in the administration and management of research projects, including budgeting and scheduling.
  • Supervise and mentor staff, interns, and students involved in technical and scientific work.

What You’ll Need

  • A Diploma in Natural Science or a relevant qualification.
  • Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Certificated Natural Scientist.
  • At least six years of post-qualification technical scientific experience in marine living resources or fisheries research.
  • Strong knowledge of scientific methodologies and data analysis related to fisheries research.
  • Familiarity with crustacean fisheries, particularly the South Coast Rock Lobster and KZN trawl fisheries.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining scientific and technical equipment.
  • Valid South African driving license and willingness to undertake fieldwork and extended hours.
  • Good communication, planning, and organizational skills to work within a multidisciplinary team.
