About the Role
The Department of Health is seeking a dedicated Social Worker Grade 1 for Mental Health and Substance Abuse based at Themba Hospital in Witbank, Nkangala District, and at Ermelo Hospital in Gert Sibande District. What You’ll Do
- Assist in the implementation of the Mental Health Care Act and related policies.
- Manage cases for state patients on leave of absence and conditional discharge.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings to assess and plan care.
- Evaluate information to compile forensic court reports and make recommendations.
- Conduct inquiries and interviews as part of case management responsibilities.
- Provide counseling and support to mental health care users.
- Maintain accurate records of social work interventions and outcomes.
- Collaborate with other departments and NGOs to stay updated on relevant developments.
What You’ll Need
- Senior Certificate / Grade 12 and a Degree in Social Work or Social Science.
- Current registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions as a Social Worker (SACSSP) valid until 2026.
- Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Care Act 17 of 2002.
- Strong time management, planning, and organizing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and report writing abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure with professionalism and integrity.
- Skills in advisory, monitoring, evaluation, and policy analysis.
