What You’ll Do

  • Develop and implement systems and procedures relevant to plant breeding and improvement.
  • Verify applications and technical questionnaires submitted in accordance with legislative requirements.
  • Collaborate with farm managers to establish trials and identify suitable locations for candidates and comparative varieties.
  • Engage with clients regarding their applications and conduct site visits for better understanding.
  • Perform technical scientific analyses and collect data on candidates and standard varieties.
  • Evaluate candidates based on International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) guidelines.
  • Compile variety descriptions and DUS reports, ensuring compliance with prescribed requirements.
  • Provide technical support and advice to registrars and plant improvement organizations.
  • Participate in research and development initiatives, including contributions to UPOV guidelines.
  • Manage reference collections and ensure proper filing systems are in place.

What You’ll Need

  • A Grade 12 certificate and a BSc (Hon) or M Tech in Botany, Agronomy, Horticulture, Genetics, or Plant Biotechnology.
  • Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNSP) as a Professional Natural Scientist.
  • A minimum of three years’ post-qualification experience in botany, plant taxonomy, or plant breeding.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently, demonstrating strong organizational skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
