What You’ll Do

  • Provide vascular services to all departments at Albert Luthuli Hospital and other relevant Durban Metropolitan State Hospitals.
  • Manage and control vascular services as delegated, ensuring high-quality patient care.
  • Maintain ethical and professional standards in all clinical practices.
  • Offer after-hour care in alignment with the commuted overtime contract.
  • Train undergraduate medical students and allied healthcare personnel, participating in formal teaching as required.
  • Promote community-oriented services and conduct outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in the Quality Improvement Programmes of the Department.
  • Engage in clinical research and academic programmes, contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge.
  • Organise both academic and clinical service functions, including ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
  • Provide academic and clinical administrative leadership and participate in senior management activities within the hospital.

What You’ll Need

  • An MBChB Degree and a specialist qualification in General Surgery registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
  • Current registration with HPCSA as a certified vascular specialist or general surgeon.
  • For Grade 1: No experience required; Registrars who have completed their training may apply with documentary evidence of HPCSA registration.
  • For Grade 2: Five years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist post-registration.
  • For Grade 3: Ten years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist post-registration.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in surgery, with the ability to teach and supervise junior staff.
  • Strong middle management skills, knowledge of research principles, and excellent administrative, decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Additional experience or intention to train as a vascular surgeon is beneficial.
