The Department of Correctional Services is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Deputy Commissioner: Facilities Planning and Property, based at the National Head Office in Pretoria. This pivotal position is instrumental in ensuring that our correctional facilities are well-managed, upgraded, and developed in alignment with government standards. The Deputy Commissioner will lead strategic initiatives that focus on improving the infrastructure of correctional centres, which directly impacts the effectiveness of rehabilitation and reintegration programs for offenders, ultimately contributing to a safer community.

This role is significant in fostering relationships with stakeholders, including the Department of Public Works, to ensure that projects are executed efficiently and comply with the Government-wide Immovable Asset Management Act (GIAMA). What You’ll Do

• Manage and oversee the upgrading of existing correctional facilities and the construction of new ones.
• Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including the Department of Public Works and the Independent Development Trust (IDT).
• Provide strategic leadership and direction within the Chief Directorate.
• Ensure compliance with the Government-wide Immovable Asset Management Act (GIAMA).
• Determine the optimal size and design of correctional centres, including projects under the SIR initiative.
• Manage performance information and maintain oversight of human resources, finances, and assets.

What You’ll Need

• An undergraduate qualification (NQF level 7) in Building Sciences or a relevant field.
• Registration with a building-related professional body.
• A certificate for entry into the Senior Management Services (SMS) from the National School of Government (NSG), required prior to appointment.
• A minimum of five years’ experience at a senior managerial level.
• Proficiency in computer applications.
• A valid driver’s licence.
• Strong understanding of the Justice Cluster dynamics and related legislative frameworks, including the Public Service Act.
• Proven competencies in strategic leadership, client orientation, financial management, and project management.
