About the Role
The Department of Health is seeking a dedicated Pharmacist Grade 1 to 3 (Production) to join the team at New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town. This role is crucial in ensuring that patients receive quality pharmaceutical care, which directly impacts the well-being of the community. What You’ll Do
- Provide quality pharmaceutical care to patients through diligent monitoring of work procedures
- Conduct ward audits to ensure compliance with standards for medication storage and handling
- Assist in managing pharmaceutical expenditure by analyzing trends and implementing cost-control strategies
- Collate and interpret pharmaceutical data to represent pharmacy services effectively in meetings
- Perform outreach visits to facilities, offering support and advice on pharmaceutical services
- Supervise and train Pharmacist Assistants, fostering professional growth and productivity
What You’ll Need
- Basic qualification accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) for registration as a Pharmacist
- Registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist
- Grade 1: No experience required post-registration for SA qualified pharmacists; 1 year for foreign qualified pharmacists
- Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years relevant experience post-registration for SA qualified pharmacists; 6 years for foreign qualified pharmacists
- Grade 3: Minimum of 13 years relevant experience post-registration for SA qualified pharmacists; 14 years for foreign qualified pharmacists
- Valid Driver’s License and willingness to work on-call and overtime as needed
- Strong knowledge of health policies, pharmaceutical laws, and good communication skills

Requirements
Minimum educational qualification: Basic qualification accredited with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) that allows registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist.Registration with a professional council: Registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist.
Experience: Grade 1: None after registration as Pharmacist with the SAPC in respect of SA qualified employees.
1-year relevant experience after registration as Pharmacist with a recognized foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience after registration as a Pharmacist with the SAPC in respect of SA qualified employees.
6 years’ relevant experience after registration as Pharmacist with a recognized foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
Grade 3: A minimum of 13 years’ relevant experience after registration as Pharmacist with the SAPC in respect of SA qualified employees.
14 years’ relevant experience after registration as Pharmacist with a recognized foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
Inherent requirements of the job: Willingness to perform on-call duties and work overtime should the neionalionaaled arise, after hours including weekends and public holidays.
Valid Driver’s license.
Competencies (knowledge/skills): Knowledge of National and Provincial Health Policies and Pharmaceutical Acts and Laws.
Ability to work accurately under pressure and maintain a high 199 standard of professionalism.
Ability and willingness to train staff.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Computer literacy.
Familiar with Hospital level healthcare Environment, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Rational Medicine Use.
Job Duties
Perform relief duties to provide quality pharmaceutical care to patients by monitoring work procedures, ensuring compliance to provincial code list and ensuring clinical service delivery.Assist with ensuring quality of care of pharmacy services by doing ward audits in areas where medicine is kept.
Assist with medicine management by ensuring safe and reliable procurement, storage, control and distribution of quality pharmaceuticals.
Assist with managing pharmaceutical expenditure which includes monitoring, evaluation and analysis of expenditure trends and implement strategies to control expenditure within financial prescripts.
Assist with collating and interpreting pharmaceutical data and ensure representation of pharmacy services at all relevant meetings.
Conduct outreach visits to facilities within the sub-structure and provide pharmaceutical services, advice and support, including inspections, monitoring and assessment of pharmaceutical services and medicine management practices, requiring travel to supported facilities.
Support with monitoring of Human Resources and supervising of Pharmacists Assistants to ensure optimum productivity and people development.
