What You’ll Do

• Manage and communicate effectively to ensure the efficient operation of theatre lists.
• Participate in the collection of statistics and the completion of medicolegal documents.
• Deliver comprehensive after-hours emergency and urgent surgical services to patients in various units.
• Conduct pre-operative assessments and resuscitation of surgical patients, planning appropriate management strategies.
• Perform emergency and urgent trauma surgical procedures, demonstrating proficiency in emergency UGI endoscopy and upper-GI bleeding management.
• Conduct post-operative assessments and care, investigating and managing potential complications.
• Engage in teaching and training of interns, contributing to their professional growth.

What You’ll Need

• An appropriate qualification allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Surgery.
• Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Surgery.
• For Grade 1: No experience required post-registration with HPCSA.
• For Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration.
• For Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration.
• Willingness to work sessional hours, including weekends and public holidays.
• Competency in general surgery and emergency UGI endoscopy.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team and engage with all levels of staff.
• A keen interest in developing an academic career.
