About the Role
The Department of Health is looking for a dedicated Medical Officer Grade 1 to Grade 3 in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, based at the Mitchells Plain District Hospital in Cape Town. This role is critical in providing high-quality medical care to women facing non-acute and emergency obstetric and gynaecological conditions. What You’ll Do
- Provide clinical management for non-acute and emergency obstetric and gynaecological presentations in the emergency centres.
- Perform surgical procedures independently, including complicated caesarean sections and laparotomies.
- Manage critically ill patients, including performing resuscitation when necessary.
- Supervise and teach students, interns, and midwives to promote skill development.
- Ensure effective administration regarding clinical and non-clinical matters, including medico-legal work.
- Guide and lead initiatives that align with the department’s strategic goals.
- Maintain a cost-efficient service level concerning laboratory services, blood, and medical supplies.
What You’ll Need
- An appropriate qualification that allows registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
- For Grade 1: No experience required post-registration for South African qualified employees; at least 1 year relevant experience for foreign qualified employees without community service requirement.
- For Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ experience post-registration for South African qualified employees; at least 6 years for foreign qualified employees.
- For Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ experience post-registration for South African qualified employees; at least 11 years for foreign qualified employees.
- A valid driver’s licence (Code B/EB) and the ability to work after-hours, including on a commuted overtime contract.
- Competency in obstetrics and gynaecology, with the ability to perform caesarean sections and assisted deliveries safely and independently.
- Computer literacy in MS Office is mandatory.

Requirements

A minimum of 6 years’ relevant experience after registration as Medical Practitioner with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified 198 employees, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner in respect of SA qualified employees.
A minimum of 11 years’ relevant experience after registration as Medical Practitioner with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
Inherent requirements of the job: A valid (Code B/EB) driver’s licence.
Commuted overtime contract is compulsory, as well as the ability to work after-hours.
Competencies (knowledge/skills): Appropriate experience and skills in obstetrics and gynaecology care.
Ability to work in a team and with all levels of staff.
Must be able to do a Caesarean section safely and without supervision.
Must be able to perform assisted deliveries (vacuums) safely and without supervision Computer literacy in MS Office mandatory.
Job Duties
Clinical management of all non-acute and emergency O&G presentation to the emergency centres (labour ward and gynae EC).Operating independently (theatre cases include complicated caesarean sections, laparotomies for ectopic pregnancies, evacuation of uterus, postpartum sterilizations).
Managing critically ill patients including resuscitation.
Management of early pregnancy complications which needs a basic O&G ultrasound competency.
Supervision and teaching of students, interns and midwives.
Provide an efficient administration service regarding all clinical and non-clinical matters and medico-legal work.
Provide guidance and leadership towards the realization of strategic goals and objectives of the department.
Ensure a cost - efficient service at clinical level with regards to laboratory services, blood, medicine, consumables and equipment.
