About the Role
The Gauteng Department of Public Safety is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Department (HOD) to join their team in Johannesburg. What You’ll Do
- Serve as the Accounting Officer, ensuring compliance with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA)
- Oversee the monitoring of police conduct and compliance by law enforcement agencies
- Coordinate the effective functioning of safety structures across Gauteng
- Establish and maintain community-police relations to enhance public safety
- Lead the implementation of Social Crime Prevention programmes
- Direct the establishment of partnerships with safety stakeholders, including the private sector
- Report on police oversight to various government bodies, including the Premier and Legislature
- Ensure compliance and management of vehicle testing stations and driving schools
- Implement road safety education and traffic law enforcement programmes
- Provide strategic direction for victim services and community empowerment centres
- Enhance stakeholder engagement and intergovernmental relations across various sectors
- Promote professional ethics and combat corruption within the department
- Direct the development and implementation of provincial transport safety policies
What You’ll Need
- A relevant postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) in Public Administration/Management, Business Administration/Management, Social Science, Security Management, or Law
- A minimum of ten years of relevant experience at a senior management level
- Proven ability to operationalize compliance with legislation and policy at both provincial and local levels
- Strong financial management skills with experience managing a multi-billion-rand budget
- Knowledge of government priorities and the Outcomes Based Approach
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and reporting skills
- Ability to work under pressure and manage extensive travel commitments
