About the Role
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is seeking a dedicated Deputy Director: Integrated Fire Management to join their team in Pretoria. This pivotal role is vital to the management and development of fire safety policies and legislation across South Africa. As a Deputy Director, you will engage directly with communities and various stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act (NVFFA) and related policies, significantly contributing to public safety and environmental stewardship in our diverse landscapes.
In this role, you’ll not only oversee the formulation and amendment of key policy instruments but also manage veldfire risk profiles. Your work will foster cooperative governance and collaborative efforts among different organs of state. This position is instrumental in promoting compliance with fire management regulations and raising public awareness, ensuring that both urban and rural communities are prepared for the challenges posed by veldfires.

What You’ll Do
- Manage the development and amendment of the NVFFA and relevant policy instruments.
- Oversee the formulation of strategies, action plans, guidelines, and standards related to fire management.
- Coordinate the assignment of powers and duties to provinces and other governmental bodies to enhance cooperative governance.
- Facilitate consultations with provinces to administer delegated provisions of the NVFFA effectively.
- Develop protocols for collaboration with integrated veldfire management institutions.
- Promote compliance with the NVFFA and raise awareness of its importance among the public.
- Provide technical assistance during law enforcement operations related to fire management.
- Collect and analyze veldfire-related statistics to inform policy and operational decisions.
What You’ll Need
- A National Diploma (NQF 6) in Forestry or a relevant qualification.
- At least 5 years of experience in a forestry-related field, with 3 years in a junior managerial position.
- Strong knowledge of the National Forestry Act, Fire Protection Act, and other relevant legislation.
- Excellent communication and general management skills.
- Proficient in policy development and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage projects effectively.
- Strong analytical skills and experience in report writing and financial management.
