About the Role
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is seeking a dedicated Assistant Director: Line Net, Invertebrates & Seaweed to join their team in Cape Town at the Foretrust Building. This role is crucial for managing the commercial inshore fishing sectors, which include Abalone, Oyster, White Mussels, Seaweed, Traditional Linefish, Netfish, and Squid. The work you will do directly impacts sustainable fishing practices and ensures the preservation of marine resources, benefiting both the local community and South Africa’s broader environmental goals.
In this role, you will engage with various stakeholders, ensuring compliance with regulations while promoting sustainable practices in fisheries management. What You’ll Do
- Regulate processes necessary for the management of commercial inshore fishing sectors.
- Initiate draft submissions for determining total allowable catch and effort for applicable fishing sectors.
- Reconcile fishers’ catch data against their allocations to monitor over-catches.
- Review and approve permits for commercial fishing and fish processing establishments.
- Verify and support the approval of permits for the export, import, and transport of fish and fish products.
- Manage the collection and dissemination of data and information for the sector.
- Participate in legal proceedings against non-compliant right holders.
- Compile reports and submissions in response to appeals.
- Coordinate stakeholder communication and manage working group meetings.
What You’ll Need
- A National Diploma (NQF6) or higher in Fisheries Management, Natural Science, Environmental Science, or a relevant qualification recognized by SAQA.
- At least three (3) years’ experience in Natural Resources Management or a relevant field.
- Knowledge of the Marine Living Resource Act, 1998, and other related legislation.
- Familiarity with policy development and review, as well as project and fisheries management.
- Strong communication, administration, and numerical skills.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
