About the Role
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual for the role of Solicitor-General, based in the vibrant city of Pretoria. This pivotal position plays a crucial role in providing strategic leadership and governance oversight of national litigation involving the State. In this role, you will oversee civil litigation across all State Attorney Offices, establishing national litigation strategies and governance frameworks. Your work will directly impact the legal landscape of South Africa, driving transformation and professionalization within litigation services, and promoting sound governance while enhancing transparency and accountability in public service.

What You’ll Do
- Provide strategic leadership and national coordination for state litigation
- Oversee and manage civil litigation across State Attorney Offices
- Establish governance frameworks, norms, and standards for legal representation
- Monitor compliance with court orders and implement corrective measures for non-compliance
- Develop national litigation policies and support constitutional and precedent-setting cases
- Promote ethical conduct and transparency within the department
- Drive the transformation of litigation services and support emerging legal practitioners
- Manage financial risks and contingent liabilities in line with relevant legislation
- Implement knowledge management and digital litigation systems
What You’ll Need
- An NQF Level 8 qualification in Law or equivalent recognized by SAQA
- Admission as an Advocate or Attorney with rights of appearance in the High Court of South Africa
- A minimum of ten years’ experience at a senior managerial level
- Extensive experience in litigation, particularly with high-profile cases
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the State Attorney Act and Public Finance Management Act
- Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills
- Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and commitment to public service values
