What You’ll Do

  • Facilitate the daily operations of the legal unit within the Refugee Appeals Authority.
  • Draft and amend legislation administered by the Authority.
  • Provide verbal and written legal opinions on relevant legislation.
  • Conduct legal research and offer well-substantiated legal advice.
  • Prepare legal documents and provide advice to Refugee Reception Offices.
  • Liaise with other state departments on legislative matters.
  • Attend to litigation matters and collaborate with the department’s legal service directorate.
  • Participate in the legislative drafting process and scrutinize international agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with risk management policies and procedures.
  • Support digital transformation initiatives within the department.

What You’ll Need

  • An LLB degree or equivalent four-year legal qualification at NQF level 7.
  • Relevant legal experience for different levels:
  • MR1: No previous legal experience required.
  • MR2: One year of relevant experience in drafting and litigation.
  • MR3: Two years of relevant experience in a litigation environment.
  • MR4: Four years of relevant experience in a litigation environment.
  • MR5: Six years of relevant experience in a litigation environment.
  • Admission as an Attorney or Advocate is required for MR2-5.
  • A valid Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Immigration Act and Refugee Act.
  • Strong communication, legal writing, and drafting skills.
  • Ability to manage projects and budgets effectively.
  • Competence in technology and computer networks.
