What You’ll Do
- Act as the Departmental Accountant, overseeing the financial operations of the Western Cape Education Department.
- Develop, implement, and review departmental accounting policies and procedures.
- Manage the reconciliation and oversight of the Departmental Bank Account.
- Handle month-end and year-end accounts closure processes.
- Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements along with supporting documentation.
- Monitor and manage departmental asset and liability accounts effectively.
- Oversee receivables, including recording, collection, and banking processes.
- Ensure compliance with statutory deductions related to salary administration.
- Maintain necessary financial registers, including those for unauthorized and irregular expenditure.
- Respond to audit inquiries and manage relationships with auditors and internal teams.
- Identify training needs within the directorate and implement capacity-building interventions.
- Provide strategic direction for financial administration aligned with departmental objectives.
What You’ll Need
- An undergraduate qualification (NQF level 7) recognized by SAQA.
- At least 5 years of experience in middle or senior management roles.
- Successful completion of the Certificate for entry into Senior Management Service (SMS).
- Valid driver’s license and proficiency in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
- Strong knowledge of financial accounting principles, government financial systems, and applicable legislation.
- Excellent leadership, team-building, and interpersonal skills.
- High level of computer literacy, particularly in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
