What You’ll Do

  • Provide coordination and administrative support for SAGNC activities.
  • Facilitate the standardization of geographical names through liaison with Provincial Geographical Names Committees.
  • Ensure compliance of geographical name applications with the Council’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist in drafting responses to inquiries and requests related to geographical names.
  • Compile and circulate meeting calendars for SAGNC meetings and stakeholder engagements.
  • Conduct evidence-based research on geographical names and heritage to support national standardization processes.
  • Document indigenous knowledge and collaborate academically on place-name heritage.
  • Provide secretariat support by arranging logistics for meetings and preparing meeting documentation.
  • Assist with the nomination and appointment process of new SAGNC members and coordinate their induction programs.
  • Organize awareness campaigns and monitor stakeholder engagement initiatives.

What You’ll Need

  • Senior Certificate/Matric Certificate/Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
  • A three-year Degree or National Diploma (NQF level 6) in Geography, Heritage Studies, or a relevant field.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years at a Heritage Officer level.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of the South African Geographical Names Council Act, 1998 and the Heritage Sector.
  • Familiarity with Public Service legislation and regulations.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy and research presentation skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal relations skills.
  • Knowledge of ArcView, ArcMap, and Visual Basics will be advantageous.
  • Proven problem-solving, planning, and organizing abilities.
