About the Opportunity

Vaal Central Water (VCW), a Schedule 3B National Government Business Entity, is dedicated to providing bulk water services across the Free State and Northern Cape provinces. Accountable to the Minister of Water and Sanitation and Parliament, VCW is committed to fostering socio-economic transformation through education. This bursary programme aims to cultivate a skilled and diverse workforce ready to tackle the challenges of the water sector.

Closing Dates

Applications for the Vaal Central Water Bursary Programme must be submitted by January 16, 2026. Late submissions will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Recipients of the bursary will be expected to maintain satisfactory academic progress and may be required to participate in vacation work, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), or job shadowing. A two-year work-back period is mandatory upon completion of studies.

Requirements/Qualifications

Eligible candidates must:

  • Be South African citizens aged 18-25
  • Be in Grade 12 or have completed Matric with at least 60% in Mathematics, Physical Science, and related subjects
  • Intend to pursue full-time studies at an accredited South African tertiary institution in 2026
  • Demonstrate a passion for the water sector
  • Come from historically disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Not hold any other bursary or financial assistance

Preference is given to female students, students with disabilities, and those from Vaal Central Water’s fence-line communities in the Free State and Northern Cape.

Benefits

The bursary covers full tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, accommodation or residence costs, and provides a living allowance, ensuring that recipients can focus entirely on their academic pursuits.

Academic Requirements (APS)

Applicants must meet the following APS thresholds:

  • Engineering fields (Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental Engineering): APS 32–36
  • Minimum 60% in Mathematics and Physical Science

Selection Process

Selection is competitive and based on academic performance, financial need, career motivation, and alignment with VCW’s strategic skills pipeline. Interviews or assessments may be required.

Bursary Conditions

Funding is awarded for one academic year and is renewable subject to satisfactory academic performance. VCW reserves the right to withdraw funding if conditions are not met.
