About the Role
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is looking for a dedicated Tradesman Aid (Carpentry) based at the Head Office in Cape Town. This role plays a vital part in maintaining the integrity and functionality of public facilities, ensuring that they meet the needs of the community. As a Tradesman Aid, you will assist skilled artisans in a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, primarily focusing on carpentry, plumbing, painting, and building trades. Your contributions will directly impact the safety and aesthetics of hospital buildings across the region, making this position essential for delivering quality public services to the community.

What You’ll Do
- Assist with minor maintenance tasks in hospital buildings, ensuring all facilities are in optimal condition.
- Help install plant and equipment, as well as assist with alterations as necessary.
- Maintain a clean and organized workshop environment, ensuring tools and materials are available and in good condition.
- Support artisans in executing carpentry, plumbing, painting, and building-related duties.
- Take responsibility for job cards assigned, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently.
- Participate in emergency breakdowns and after-hours repairs when required.
- Collaborate on planning and décor for new installations and alterations.
What You’ll Need
- Minimum educational qualification: Grade 10 (or equivalent).
- Basic workshop experience and familiarity with building trades.
- Willingness to travel throughout the Western Cape Province.
- Physical fitness to perform manual labor tasks effectively.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good knowledge of building-related trades, including carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
- Awareness of the SANS 10 – 400 Building Regulation and the Machinery and Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Requirements
Minimum educational qualification: Grade 10 (or equivalent).Experience: Appropriate basic Workshop experience.
Appropriate experience within the respective fields below.
Inherent requirements of the job: Willingness to travel throughout the Western Cape Province.
Physically fit to do manual labour.
Competencies (knowledge/skills): Ability to handle tools.
Good interpersonal skills.
Good communication skills.
Sound Knowledge of mainly in Building related trades, like: (Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting and Building).
Basic sound knowledge of the SANS 10 - 400 Building Regulation.
Be conversant xwith the requirements of the Machinery and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Must have a knowledgeable experience in Building trades.
Job Duties
Carry out minor maintenance tasks.Assist with the installation of plant, equipment and alterations.
Ensure that tools and material are available when needed.
Ensure areas in workshop /s and working environment is clear of obstructions and cleaned daily.
Assist the Artisans in the execution of their duties as per Breakdown below.
Control over tools and materials.
Mainly Carpentry Plumbing, Painting and Building trades related duties.
Maintenance and repairs by painting, glazing, skimming installations of Drywalls, ceilings and spray- painting of equipment at Hospital buildings.
Repairs and Service of infrastructure equipment at Facilities, according to standards and relevant regulations.
Occasional Support in Carpentry Plumbing Painting and Building Departments.
Take control of Job cards assigned.
Assist the Artisan Foreman 231 / Artisan in certain duties assigned.
Emergency breakdowns (including afterhours repairs).
Planning and décor of new installations and alterations.
