What You’ll Do

  • Perform procedures related to the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources.
  • Process and maintain harvested materials, including cleaning, packaging, and storage.
  • Monitor and manage shade house/field trials, applying fertilizers and pesticides as needed.
  • Assist with community seed banks and in situ conservation projects.
  • Conduct germination testing and moisture content analysis for gene bank accessions.
  • Collect and record data on accessions and contribute to research outputs.
  • Support the preparation of materials for safe duplication and transfer under agreements.

What You’ll Need

  • A Grade 12 certificate and a BSc or National Diploma in Botany, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture, or a relevant qualification.
  • Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Certified Natural Scientist.
  • At least 3 years of post-qualification experience in botany, horticulture, agronomy, agriculture, or plant genetic resource conservation.
  • Knowledge of conservation principles, seed storage, and data management.
  • Strong planning, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy and effective communication.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel nationally and regionally.
