What You’ll Do
- Investigate and analyze the classification of dams, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Evaluate engineering aspects of license applications for new dam constructions and alterations.
- Monitor safety evaluations and investigation reports, conducting risk assessments as necessary.
- Liaise with regional officials and dam owners to implement safety betterment initiatives.
- Develop and maintain guidelines and policies regarding dam safety.
- Provide presentations and advisory support on dam safety legislation to various stakeholders.
- Manage and motivate a team, ensuring a competent knowledge base within the engineering discipline.
- Supervise and train candidate engineers and technicians, fostering professional growth.
- Generate reports and statistics to track progress in the Dam Safety Programme.
What You’ll Need
- An Engineering degree (B Eng/BSc (Eng) or relevant qualification in Civil Engineering.
- A minimum of six (6) years of post-qualification experience in the Water Engineering field.
- Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer.
- A valid, unexpired driver’s license.
- Extensive experience in dam engineering related to design, flood hydrology, and safety management.
- Strong knowledge of program and project management, legal compliance, and technical consulting.
- Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership skills, with a focus on team management.
- Proficiency in computer-aided engineering applications and financial management.
- Strong communication skills and customer-focused approach.

Job Duties
Investigate, analyse, and recommend classification of dams.Evaluate and investigate engineering aspects of license applications for the construction of new dams, alteration of existing dams, first filling and operational aspects of dams.
Monitor the safety evaluation and investigation reports and carry out risk assessments.
Follow up on dam safety betterment work with owners of dams.
Develop/maintain guidelines and policies on dams with safety risk.
Liaise with regional officials, dam owners, professional engineers, and the public.
Give presentations and advice on dam safety matters and legislation.
People management.
Manage the development, motivation and utilization of human resources for the discipline to ensure competent knowledge base for the continued success of engineering services according to organizational needs and requirements, manage subordinates’ key performance areas by setting and monitoring performance standards and taking actions to correct deviations to achieve departmental objectives.
Supervise and train candidate engineers 130 and technicians as required.
Generate reports and statistics to measure progress with the Dam Safety Programme.
