What You’ll Do

  • Manage and supervise prosecutions in the Regional and District Courts, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and NPA policy directives.
  • Conduct criminal proceedings, including bail applications and trials, while ensuring trial readiness.
  • Screen dockets and make prosecutorial decisions, guiding investigations effectively.
  • Consult with victims, witnesses, and legal representatives, applying a victim-centred approach to all interactions.
  • Draft and review legal documents such as charge sheets, legal opinions, and court reports.
  • Promote court productivity through effective case flow management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Monitor backlog and ensure compliance with performance metrics and court returns.
  • Identify operational challenges and implement corrective measures to enhance prosecution quality.
  • Train, mentor, and guide junior prosecutors, ensuring high standards of legal practice and performance management.

What You’ll Need

  • An LLB degree or an appropriate legal qualification for serving prosecutors seeking promotion.
  • A minimum of six years of post-qualification legal experience.
  • Demonstrable competency in independent, professional, and accountable legal practice.
  • Strong management skills and knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Constitution and the Criminal Procedure Act.
  • Proficiency in prosecution and litigation, with the ability to guide complex investigations.
  • Willingness to travel within the DPP division as required.
  • General computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • A valid driver’s licence.

Requirements

An LLB.

For serving prosecutors seeking promotion any appropriate legal qualification.

At least six (6) years post qualification legal experience.

Demonstrable competency in acting Independently, Professionally, Accountable and with Credibility.

Good management skills.

Knowledge of legislation and regulations applicable to the public service is essential, including the Constitution, the Criminal Procedure Act, the Public Service Act, the Labour Law Act, relevant regulations and related legislation.

Must have the ability to act independently or within minimum supervision.

Proficiency in prosecution/litigation, competency in guiding investigations and giving instructions in complex or more difficult common law and statutory offences in Regional and District Court.

The applicant must be willing to travel within the DPP division.

Good management skills.

Must be able to work independently without constant supervision.

General computer literacy and knowledge of programs in Microsoft Office.

A valid drivers’ licence.

Job Duties

Manage, supervise and conduct prosecutions in the Regional and District Courts in accordance with applicable legislation, NPA policy directives and related instructions.

Screen dockets, make prosecutorial decisions, guide investigations, ensure trial readiness and prepare matters for court.

Conduct and manage criminal proceedings, including bail applications, trials, sentence proceedings and other complex matters.

Consult with victims, witnesses, investigating officers, legal representatives and other stakeholders while applying a victim-centred approach.

Draft and check charge sheets, plea and sentence agreements, legal opinions, reports, representations and other court documents.

Promote court productivity through case flow management, stakeholder engagement and appropriate use of statutory mechanisms to shorten proceedings.

Monitor backlog, remand detainee, priority, AFU, money laundering and other prescribed matters.

Manage and verify performance information, court returns, registers, reports and ECMS/ICMS data to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Identify operational challenges, implement corrective measures and report on progress.

Manage, train, coach, mentor and guide prosecutors, monitor the quality of their work, assist with performance management and deal with disciplinary matters where required.

Salary

R1 074 222 - R1 742 772 per annum (Level SU-3), (Total cost package)
