About the Role

The Department of Correctional Services is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals for the role of Independent Correctional Centre Visitor, based in various locations including Umzinto in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth, and other correctional centres across South Africa. This position plays a vital role in the public service by ensuring that the rights and conditions of inmates are monitored and upheld. As an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor, you will engage with inmates, hear their complaints, and report on the general conditions of incarceration, making a direct impact on the lives of those in the correctional system.

In this role, you will not only serve as a voice for the inmates but also support the officials from the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services during inspections and investigations. What You’ll Do

• Visit correctional facilities daily to engage with inmates and staff.
• Monitor conditions of incarceration and report findings.
• Document and report all instances of deaths, segregation, use of restraints, and use of force.
• Support Judicial Inspectorate officials during inspections and investigations.
• Handle administrative tasks, including capturing inmate complaints and writing detailed reports.

What You’ll Need

• Grade 12/Senior certificate.
• Computer literacy and attention to detail.
• A recent recommendation/nomination as an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor from a community organization.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Strong understanding of Batho Pele principles and public service ethics.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• A valid driver’s license is an added advantage.
• Preference for applicants residing near the correctional centre where the vacancy exists.
