About Jobs South Africa

What we are, who we serve, and how we work

Jobs South Africa is South Africa's free online job board, connecting job seekers with government vacancies, internships, learnerships, graduate programmes, and entry-level jobs across all nine provinces. We publish over 4,199 active listings and add hundreds of new jobs every week — all at no cost to job seekers.

We are particularly focused on helping young South Africans, graduates, and first-time job seekers discover public sector opportunities that are often buried in government circulars and hard-to-navigate official websites.

Yes — completely free for job seekers. Browsing jobs, searching by province or category, signing up for email alerts, using the free CV builder, and accessing all career advice articles costs nothing. There are no hidden fees, no premium tiers, and no subscription required.

Always free: We believe every South African deserves equal access to job opportunities, regardless of income.

Government job listings are sourced directly from official DPSA (Department of Public Service and Administration) vacancy circulars, which are published weekly. We parse and process these circulars to make them easier to read, search, and browse — adding location filters, department tags, and plain-English summaries.

Employers, training providers and recruiters can also submit private sector jobs, learnerships, graduate programmes, and press releases directly through our free submission portal.

New listings are added daily. Government vacancy circulars are published weekly by DPSA (typically on Fridays), and we process and publish them as quickly as possible — usually within 24–48 hours of the official release. Private sector listings and press releases are added as they are submitted and approved.

We added over 546 new jobs this week alone and 1,883 this month. Sign up for our free email newsletter to get new jobs delivered straight to your inbox the moment they go live.

We cover all nine provinces: Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Free State, North West, and Northern Cape. You can browse by province directly from the homepage or navigation menu.

Gauteng has the most listings (1,693+), followed by Western Cape (1,246+). We also cover specific cities including Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Kimberley, Mmabatho, George, and many more.

You can reach us via the Contact Us page on our website, or by WhatsApp at 066 204 1812. For CV services, email [email protected]. We are also active on Facebook, X (Twitter), WhatsApp Channel, and LinkedIn — links are in the footer of every page.

For Job Seekers

Finding, searching, and getting alerts for jobs

Use the search bar on the homepage and type any job title, keyword, or department name. You can filter results by opportunity type, province, category, and salary range. You can also browse directly by clicking any province in the navigation, or jump to a specific opportunity type from the homepage tiles.

Yes. Scroll to the bottom of any page and enter your name and email address in the newsletter signup form. You will receive daily or weekly emails featuring the latest vacancies — free of charge, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

💡

Pro tip: Signing up early means you see new government jobs before the closing dates fill up. Many positions close within two weeks of being advertised.

No. You can browse and view all jobs without creating an account. Each job listing contains the full application instructions — you apply directly to the department, not through our website. Simply follow the "How to Apply" instructions on each job listing.

The closing date is the last day the hiring department will accept applications. Applications received after this date are automatically disqualified. Government departments are strict about this — always aim to submit at least a week before the closing date to avoid postal or technical delays.

Unfortunately no — once a job shows as Closed, the application deadline has passed. We keep closed listings live for reference so you can see what types of roles each department advertises and prepare for future openings. Sign up for email alerts so you never miss a live listing again.

For government positions, South African citizenship is generally required. However, some positions allow applications from permanent residents or work permit holders, particularly in specialised fields like health care. Always check the specific requirements listed on each job posting.

Government Jobs in South Africa

Understanding the public sector and DPSA vacancies

The DPSA (Department of Public Service and Administration) publishes an official vacancy circular every week — usually on a Friday. This circular lists all open positions across every national and provincial government department in South Africa. We take these circulars, clean them up, and make them searchable on our site so you do not need to download a PDF or wade through dense government formatting.

Government employment comes with significant benefits:

  • Job security — permanent positions are highly stable
  • GEPF pension — defined benefit Government Employees Pension Fund
  • Medical aid — access to GEMS (Government Employees Medical Scheme)
  • Housing allowance — subsidy for qualifying salary levels
  • 13th cheque — annual performance bonus
  • Generous leave — maternity, sick, and family responsibility leave
  • Career progression — structured salary notches and promotions
  • Training — funded skills development and bursaries for qualifying staff

Government salaries are structured in salary bands and notches. Within each salary level, there are incremental steps that increase your pay annually based on performance. The salary shown in an advert usually represents the entry notch for that level. Your actual placement may be higher depending on your existing government experience.

Government posts are classified into salary levels 1–16:

  • Levels 1–4: General workers, cleaners, messengers, support staff
  • Levels 5–7: Clerks, admin assistants, drivers, data capturers
  • Levels 8–10: Senior officers, specialists, assistant directors
  • Levels 11–12: Deputy Directors, senior managers
  • Levels 13–16: Directors, Chief Directors, Deputy DGs, Directors-General

Most entry-level applicants will be looking at Levels 5–7. Graduate and professional roles typically start at Levels 7–9.

NQF stands for National Qualifications Framework — the system that standardises qualifications across South Africa:

  • NQF Level 4: Matric (Grade 12)
  • NQF Level 5: Higher Certificate
  • NQF Level 6: National Diploma or Advanced Certificate
  • NQF Level 7: Bachelor's Degree
  • NQF Level 8: Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma
  • NQF Level 9: Master's Degree
  • NQF Level 10: Doctoral Degree (PhD)

NQF levels in requirements do not indicate a learnership — that is a separate type of programme entirely.

Employment Equity requires government departments to work towards a workforce that reflects South Africa's demographic profile. Job ads may say "preference will be given to EE candidates" targeting under-represented groups. You should still apply if you meet the requirements — EE considerations do not automatically disqualify non-EE candidates.

🧾

Our Free CV Builder includes optional EE fields (population group, gender, disability) that are commonly requested in South African applications.

Government hiring is significantly slower than the private sector. A typical timeline from closing date to appointment is three to six months. The process includes shortlisting, competency testing, interviews, reference checks, qualification verification, and a formal appointment letter. Do not follow up before three months have passed.

📝

How to Apply for Government Jobs

Step-by-step guidance on the application process

A standard government job application requires:

  • Completed Z83 form — the official application form (mandatory)
  • CV / Curriculum Vitae — detailed work history and qualifications
  • Certified copies of qualifications — degrees, diplomas, certificates
  • Certified copy of SA ID document or passport
  • Certified copy of driver's licence — if required by the post
  • Professional registration certificates — e.g., HPCSA, SACR, if applicable
⚠️

Important: Since 2021, you may submit uncertified copies at application stage — but bring originals and certified copies to your interview if shortlisted.

It depends on the department. Each listing specifies the application method in the "How to Apply" section — options include email, online portal, or postal/hand delivery. Never apply via a method not listed in the advert. If it says "hand deliver only," emailing will result in disqualification.

Directly to the department. Jobs South Africa is an information platform — we show you the jobs and provide the application instructions, but we do not process or forward applications. Follow the "How to Apply" instructions on each listing and submit directly to the hiring department.

🚨

Scam warning: We never charge a fee for applications. Any site claiming to submit government applications on your behalf for a fee is likely a scam.

  • Late submission — received after the closing date
  • Incomplete or incorrectly completed Z83 form
  • Missing required documents
  • Applying for multiple posts on a single Z83 form
  • Not quoting the correct reference number
  • Not meeting the minimum qualification or experience requirements
  • Applying via the wrong method
  • Application not addressed to the specified contact person

Most departments state: "If you have not been contacted within three months of the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful." This is the norm. If shortlisted, you will be contacted by the department's HR team for a competency test and/or interview. Keep your phone on and check email regularly for three to six months after the closing date.

📄

The Z83 Application Form

Everything about the official government application form

The Z83 is the official application form required for all South African public service job applications. It is mandatory — you cannot apply for a government post without it. The form captures your personal details, employment history, qualifications, criminal record status, and a declaration that your information is true and accurate.

Download the latest Z83 from the DPSA website at www.dpsa.gov.za or www.gov.za. You can also collect a printed copy from any government department's HR office.

⚠️

Use the latest version: The Z83 was updated in January 2021. Applications on older versions may be disqualified. Always download a fresh copy.

  • Fill in all sections — write "N/A" if not applicable
  • Write the exact post title and reference number from the job advert
  • Only apply for one post per Z83 form
  • Sign and date the form — unsigned forms are invalid
  • For email applications, fill in the PDF version and sign before scanning

You may photocopy a blank Z83 and fill it in fresh each time. Never photocopy a completed form — each application must be freshly filled in with the specific post details and a fresh signature. Photocopied completed forms are rejected.

Since the 2021 Z83 update, you no longer need certified copies at application stage. Submit uncertified copies with your initial application. However, if shortlisted, bring originals AND certified copies to your interview. Certification is free at any police station, post office, or commissioner of oaths.

Learnerships, Internships & Graduate Programmes

Understanding the different types of opportunities

Learnerships are SETA-registered programmes that combine practical workplace experience with theoretical training, leading to a nationally recognised NQF qualification. You receive a monthly stipend. Learnerships typically last 12–24 months.

Internships are fixed-term placements (usually 12–24 months) for people who have already completed their qualification to gain practical workplace experience. You receive a monthly stipend set by the department.

📌

Key difference: Learnerships lead to a qualification. Internships give you work experience after your qualification.

Graduate programmes are structured development opportunities specifically for recent university graduates. They typically last one to two years and may include rotations across departments, mentorship, and formal training. On our site, these are tagged under the "Graduates" opportunity type — currently 323 listings.

Entry-level jobs require Grade 12 (matric) or minimal prior experience. These include roles like cleaner, driver, general worker, admin clerk, data capturer, messenger, security guard, porter, and similar support positions. Ideal for school leavers or people re-entering the workforce. We currently have 170+ entry-level listings across all provinces.

A bursary is financial funding for your studies — not a job. Government departments and companies offer bursaries to students in fields they need (engineering, health, education, finance). In return, you may be required to work for the sponsor for a set period after graduating. Browse our Bursaries section for current opportunities.

WIL is a compulsory practical component of certain university diplomas and degrees — particularly at universities of technology. It requires students to complete supervised work experience at an approved employer as part of their qualification. Departments sometimes advertise "In-service training" or "WIL placements" — these are not permanent jobs and typically do not lead directly to employment at the same department.

Salaries & Compensation

Understanding government pay, ranges, and benefits

A single figure shows the entry-level notch for that salary band. A range shows the full span from entry to maximum notch. Where a range is shown, your placement depends on your existing government service experience. The range also shows the growth potential within that post over time.

Usually no. The stated salary is the basic annual figure. Additional benefits include housing allowance, GEMS medical aid contributions, GEPF pension fund, performance bonus, and leave pay. Some senior posts advertise an "all-inclusive remuneration package" that does include benefits — the advert will specify this clearly.

Approximate entry-level government salaries for 2025/2026:

  • Level 3–4 (general worker, cleaner): ~R12,000–R14,400/month
  • Level 5–6 (admin clerk, data capturer): ~R15,400–R18,200/month
  • Level 7–8 (senior clerk, specialist): ~R20,200–R25,200/month
  • Level 9–10 (assistant director): ~R26,400–R32,900/month

These are gross figures before income tax and other deductions.

Your Rights as a Job Seeker

Protecting yourself from scams and understanding employment law

Absolutely not. It is illegal for any government department or legitimate employer to charge job seekers a fee to apply for or be considered for a position. If any entity asks for money to process your application, treat it as a scam and report it to the South African Police Service.

🚨

Red flag: Legitimate employers — including Jobs South Africa — will never ask you to pay money to apply for a job.

Common warning signs:

  • You are asked to pay any fee to apply or be considered
  • The job is offered without an interview or application process
  • Salary is unusually high for the role described
  • Communication via personal WhatsApp or Gmail, not an official government email
  • The job is not listed on the official DPSA circular or government websites
  • You are asked to share banking details or your SASSA card PIN
  • Urgency pressure — "you must respond today or lose the offer"

The CCMA (Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration) is a free, independent body that resolves labour disputes in South Africa. Use it for unfair dismissal, unfair labour practices, discrimination, or failure to pay wages. Visit www.ccma.org.za for more information.

The BCEA sets the minimum employment standards in South Africa:

  • Maximum 45 ordinary working hours per week
  • At least 21 consecutive days annual leave per year
  • 6 weeks paid sick leave per 3-year cycle
  • 4 months maternity leave
  • 3 days paid family responsibility leave per year
  • Written pay slips for every payment
